College Project-Phase 2

It's official! All of the students have completed Phase 1 of the college projects.

We have mailed off everyone's letters and now we are waiting on the responses (packages) from the colleges. Kamayah was the first student to receive a package from Tennessee Tech University. They sent her stickers and a lot of information which will be used for Phase 2.

The students and I have begun Phase 2, by exploring the genre of "Feature Articles." As we continue to dig deeper in our genre study and receive packages from the colleges, the students will begin the steps of Phase 2.

***None of the students have received any of the information for Phase 2, except for the introduction to feature articles. I just wanted to give the parents of room 318, all of the information ahead of time, so that you are informed.

The following 2 steps are needed to complete Phase 2 of the College Project:

Phase 2
  1. Compare the information about the three colleges with assigned criteria on the Facts and Figures sheet.
  2. Write a feature article comparing two colleges and picking the best one. (out of the 3 colleges that they sent letters to)
    • This will be written mostly in class, however information on how to access it on Google Docs will be forth coming.

We are still collecting-ONLY ONE WEEK LEFT

Pennies for Patients

ONLY ONE WEEK LEFT to help people who are sick with blood cancers like leukemia. Our school has joined more than 250,000 schools nationwide in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patient program.

The students and I are very excited about doing another community service project. We had a discussion about the difference they can make in someone's life with something as small as a penny! Thank you to those parents who have already emptied their coin jars. Our box is getting full!

College Project-Phase 1

The following 3 steps are needed to complete Phase 1 of the College Project:

Phase 1
  1. Choose 3 colleges with programs (majors/academic programs) that are interesting to the child.
  2. Find the Admissions Office addresses of all three colleges/universities
  3. Write a letter to each college asking for information (& souvenirs) about the college and wait for responses. A template of this letter is located on our Google Docs account.
Below are the instructions for completing all parts of Phase 1. If possible, please assist your child over this long weekend with completing all three steps.

Congratulations to Toni, Kamayah, and Maranda for completing all the steps of Phase 1 and getting all three of their letters mailed out TODAY!

Pennies for Patients

Our school has joined more than 250,000 schools nationwide in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patient program. For the next three weeks we will be helping people who are sick with blood cancers like leukemia. Every student was provided a small box to collect coins with. Once the box is full, then they need to bring it back to school, so that they can empty the pennies into our classroom's collection box. The class that collects the most coins will receive a pizza party!

The students and I are very excited about doing another community service project. We had a discussion about the difference they can make in someone's life with something as small as a penny! Thank you to those parents who have already emptied their coin jars, our box is getting full! :)

We WON the Can Food Drive!!!

We won the Ellen Thompson's first annual food drive! In a combine effort with the rest of the teachers, the school collected over 1,000 pounds of food that was donated to Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.

As a reward for our class collecting the most cans, on Friday, January 20th, we will receive a pizza party and Free Dress for free! :)

Again, I just want to personally thank each and every household from room 318 that contribute to the Can Food Drive. The students and I had a conversation about the impact and significance of their contributions and I am proud to be the teacher of such giving students.

College Project Explained

I'm sure many of you have seen your child come home with worksheets that pertain to our college project and I know you are probably wondering what is the College Project. Well...

On Monday we began a new project that all 4th and 5th graders will be completing. The project consists of letter writinga field trip, a college fair conducted by students, and making a commercial with a group. It's really exciting because students receive mail at school from the colleges. Sometimes there are boxes with lots of fun souvenirs sent by the college.

There are several parts of this project that we will be completing in school and some parts will need to be completed at home. Every student has chosen 3 states and are working on finding 1 college or university from each state.

In April, we will visit the campus of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor to see what college can be like. All phases of the project must be completed on time in order to go on the field trip. Teacher approval is required to move from one phase to the next.

Phase 1

  • Choose 3 colleges with programs (majors/academic programs) that are interesting to the child.
  • Find the Admissions Office addresses of all three colleges/universities
  • Write a letter to each college asking for information (& souvenirs) about the college and wait for responses. We will write & send the letters out from school or home. You can access the template using GoogleDocs.
Phase 2
  • Compare the information about the three colleges with assigned criteria on the Facts and Figures Sheet.
  • Write a feature article comparing two and pick the best one. This will be written mostly in school.
Phase 3
  • Field trip to U of M (cost TBA)
  • Create a tri-fold board advertising the best college for you (out of the 3 students sent letters to).
  • College Fair in school
Phase 4
  • Commercials and website creation-the commercials will advertise colleges and universities across the country and help student around the world choose a college! We will publish the commercials on the Internet!
  • There will be other multimedia components that are added later for those students who work ahead.
