African American Wax Museum

We have been exploring the genre study of BIOGRAPHIES this month. We have spent our time reading and analyzing the biographies of Wilma Rudolph and Barack Obama. We have also created three different biographies: one on Barack Obama and two others on extraordinary people that the students know.

The 4th and 5th graders will be participating in an African American Wax Museum as a culminating project to conclude this genre study. The theme for the museum is “Unsung Heroes.” The museum will be highlighting those African Americans who made great contributions to America, but often go unrecognized.

In preparation for the wax museum, your child will be creating a timeline and writing a 5-paragraph essay about their famous African American. In addition, they will condense their essay into a one-paragraph speech that they are required to memorize for the museum. Majority of the work will be done in class and will take place during the month of February.

The Wax Museum will be on March 1st. More information regarding the time will be forth coming. I hope to see you all there.

PEN PALS

I am sure by now your child has mention that our class has pen pals. We have been corresponding with a 5th grade class in Ypsilanti since December.

We will be visiting with our pen pals twice towards the end of the school year. We will be traveling to Ypsilanti to spend the day at their school and they will be coming to Detroit to spend the day at UPA. As dates become confirmed, I will keep you posted!

Milestone 2

Thank You

Matthew Hurt and family for purchasing a ream of copier paper

Xavier Martin and family for donating a game to our classroom for Fun Friday and indoor recess. The kids are very appreciative.

ATTENDANCE CONCERNS

Attendance in our classroom has declined significantly lately. With the inclement weather, I understand that driving conditions and your child’s health has contributed to the high number of tardies and absences. I only want to remind you that it is imperative to your child’s academic success that they are in school EVERYDAY and ON TIME.

MAP TESTING

MAP testing concluded this week. In our classroom I have created a wall that displays each student’s fall and winter scores along with their end of the year target goal. This allows the students to monitor and take ownership of their progress and success.

Some students have reached their end of fifth-grade target goal in some or ALL of the tested areas already. Congrats! Keep up the good work.

During our next Learning Team Meeting, I will discuss their scores and goals with you in more depth. If you have questions before the LTM, don’t hesitate to contact me.

A NOTE FROM MRS. DRAIN

I am very proud of those who worked hard and got their first Milestone completed on time with all three books and three websites as required. Many people took the opportunity that they had over the Winter break to work on finding the resources needed and turned them in early. Thank you!

It is important for us to teach the kids about using time wisely and working ahead. When you work ahead and run into a problem, it is easier to fix and frustration levels remain low.

As I prepare your child for middle school, I want to expose them to a higher expectation of organization and timeliness. Going forward, your child WILL be having multiple projects due around the same time and it is important that your child work ahead to turn in assignments early, so they won't feel overwhelmed and excuses for incomplete assignments won't be needed.

As always, I appreciate your support as I continue to expect more from your child as they begin their transition from elementary school to middle school.

MLK SPEECH

MLK SPEECH

Your child will be reciting a section from Martin L. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech on Wednesday, January 19th.

Your child is expected to have memorized their section completely in its original form.

They’re also required to rewrite their section of the speech, in a “kid-friendly” version, using their own words. Even though, they are rewriting their section, the original principles and beliefs should still conveyed.

A full detail description highlighting all of the requirements was sent home on Friday, Jan 7th
